Real Women Sing Alto
Years ago, the daughter of a friend of mine used to wear a t-shirt emblazoned with the motto “Real Women Sing Alto”. On hearing the band Heavy Shtetl that motto immediately sprung to mind. There was not a soprano in sight. Both female singers have lots of bottom tones in their singing. The nearest thing to a soprano voice in the band was Dmitro Woychuk’s soprano sax and that wails more like the madcap jazz solos of the late Sydney Bechet than any female soprano warbling. His music is definitely not lady like. Dmitro informed us that way back in the past he was inoculated with a heavy dose of Bechet’s DNA and that accounts for his addiction to New Orleans Jazz.
